Dunfermline stink: council threatens legal action
Fife Council is threatening to take legal action against a site owner identified as causing a stink in the Dunfermline area.
The sickening smell is coming from Muir Dean, near Crossgates, formerly an open cast mining site.
The local authority says it has “received a large number of complaints about the offensive odour being experienced by many in Dunfermline and the surrounding area”.
Fife Council and SEPA officials made a site visit to speak to the owner yesterday.
The council says it has been assured that there are no plans to spread any further material at this site.
A Fife Council issued a statement saying, “The source of the odour is coming from approximately 1000 tonnes of limed distillery waste which was spread by the landowner at Muir Dean on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.
“This waste is a by-product of the distilling process and is not, as reported by some, animal or human waste.
“The waste is very odorous and this has been further heightened by the hot weather and the wind blowing directly towards a large area of housing. Generally odours of this nature dissipate over a day or two.”
Well I stay in Ericht Drive , just in Pirsburgh road area and the smell is still disgusting . This is the Saturday and still can’t sit outside or hang washing out , really making me feel sickly . I was informed by someone that they were still spreading stuff on the Friday evening .

That same smell was in Kirkcaldy a few years ago.
