Caught driving when banned – on the way to court
A Fife man ignored a driving ban when he was on his way to a court appearance.
The actions of Anthony McAndrew were described as “gallus” by his solicitor.
However, the sheriff said the offence was “one of most blatant, foolish and indefensible acts” he had come across in some time.
McAndrew (44), of Drum Road, Kelty, appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.
He admitted that on 30th November on the A921 near to the junction of North Road B981, Inverkeithing, he drove while disqualified and without insurance.
Defence solicitor Elaine Buist said her client had been given a three-month ban at the Justice of the Peace court on 2nd October.
“It’s difficult to understand why he made the decision to drive to court when he was disqualified,” she admitted. “Some people might say it was gallus.”
“It’s unfathomable really,” said Sheriff James MacDonald.
He told McAndrew, “This is one of the most blatant, foolish and indefensible acts I’ve seen in the criminal courts in some time.
“You were on your way to court when you drove while disqualified.”
The sheriff imposed a community payback order with 12 months’ supervision and 200 hours of unpaid work.
McAndrew was also banned from driving for 12 months and will have to pass the extended test before his licence is returned.
