“You’ve catched me”: driving to work almost six times over the limit

A Fife man was driving to work when he was stopped by police and found to be almost six times over the limit.

The sozzled motorist Alan Campbell told officers, “You’ve catched me.”

Campbell (65), of Porterfield, Comrie, appeared in the dock at Dunfermline Sheriff Court.

He admitted that on 23rd March in Kings Road, Rosyth, he drove a car having consumed excess alcohol.

His reading was 129 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit being 22 microgrammes.

Depute fiscal Azrah Yousaf told the court Campbell was stopped by police at 5.20pm and failed a breath test.

This had been after police received calls from members of the public concerned about his driving.

He told the officers, “You’ve catched me. That’s it.”

Defence solicitor Elaine Buist said her client had lost his job with a security company as a result of the incident.

“He’s extremely remorseful. He had been suffering from depression at the time,” she added.

Sheriff Craig McSherry, said, “When someone says, ‘You’ve catched me’ it could mean that this was what he does all the time and it’s just on this particular occasion he’s been caught.”

Ms Buist said, “He had taken some alcohol and intended to phone in sick to work that day. His wife then had a thing or two to say about this and told him to get to work.

“His plan was to stay off work because he wasn’t feeling well.”

Sheriff McSherry said he took into account Campbell was a first offender when deciding not to jail him.

He imposed a community payback order with 300 hours of unpaid work. Campbell was banned from driving for two years and a forfeiture order was granted for his car.
